Here’s What Your Favorite Everybody Loves Raymond Stars Are Up To Now

If you turned on your TV between 1996 and 2005, chances are you caught at least one episode of Everyone Loves Raymond. The hugely popular sitcom follows the Long Island-based Barone family, with the series’ titular character at the helm. Ray is a pretty normal guy, though – and that may be why audiences connected with him and his relatives so much. But it’s been years since their story ended, so whatever happened to the cast? Here we tell all.

20. Stan – Victor Raider-Wexler

Victor Raider-Wexler appeared in nine episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond as Stan, a buddy to Frank Barone. The two know each other from the Caribou Lodge – a social club where Frank and his pals lounge in the sauna and hang by the bar.

Raider-Wexler has kept himself quite busy since his Raymond days. You may have seen him guest star in House or Without a Trace. Or you could have heard his voice in one of six episodes of American Dad, in which – perhaps ironically – he voiced a character named Ray. And he also played Mr. Kaplan in another comedy, The King of Queens, until it ended in the 2000s. Voice and narration jobs seem to take up a lot of his time these days.

19. Garvin – Len Lesser

Len Lesser played one of Frank Barone’s friends named Garvin. You may remember him a bit more than Stan, as he has a signature move in the show. Every time he sees Ray, Garvin raises his hands in the air in joy. And if you ever watched Seinfeld, you get the reference. Lesser is Jerry’s uncle in that show, and that character does the same thing whenever his nephew appears.

Lesser worked a bit after his handful of Everybody Loves Raymond appearances. He played Grampa Joey in 2005’s Raw Footage and Inspector Krol in Frankenstein & the Werewolf Reborn!, which came out the same year. But Lesser sadly passed away in February 2011 from pneumonia, aged 88.

18. Peter MacDougall – Chris Elliott

Robert Barone – played by Brad Garrett – has a nemesis in Peter MacDougall, the nerdy older brother of his wife Amy. But eventually the two men come to realize they’re quite similar. Both of them have been eclipsed in life by their siblings, who their parents clearly like more.

Chris Elliott played the part of Peter. And if you’re a big fan of modern sitcoms, you probably recognize him from more than just Raymond. Most notably, he starred in the cult hit Schitt’s Creek as Roland Schitt, the mayor of the humorously named town that gives the show its name. Most of us still probably remember him for There’s Something About Mary, though, even if it was released in 1998.

17. Warren – Robert Culp

Robert Culp appeared in 11 episodes of the show as Debra’s father, Warren. Unfortunately for him, his daughter – Ray’s wife – is the only member of the family that likes him. His son-in-law avoids spending time with him because he claims that Warren drinks a bit too much.

Culp had a more-than-50-year career in Hollywood, but most of his credits come from before his time on Raymond. And he worked in film and TV until the day he died in 2010. In fact, at the time of his passing, he had just wrapped a film called The Assignment. He had a number of screenplays in the works as well.

16. Linda Gruenfelder – Maggie Wheeler

Maggie Wheeler almost played a much larger part in Everybody Loves Raymond. The producers wanted to cast her in the role of Debra Barone, you see, but network executives ultimately went with Patricia Heaton instead. But she didn’t leave her audition empty-handed. Instead, Wheeler went on to portray Linda Gruenfelder, a friend of the Barones.

This wasn’t Wheeler’s most famous sitcom job, of course. She most famously played Chandler Bing’s girlfriend Janice Goralnik in several episodes of Friends. And if you’re a big enough fan of Friends to have watched the 2021 reunion episode, then you may have caught her surprise appearance in that special, too.

15. Lois Whelan – Katherine Helmond

Debra’s mother, Lois, often appears alongside Warren. And her story’s much the same, of course. Her daughter’s husband doesn’t like his in-laws, often making fun of their jet-setting lifestyle. Seasoned actress Katherine Helmond played the part of Lois, with decades of TV acting experience already under her belt.

After Raymond, Helmond swapped sitcoms for cartoons. She voiced Lizzie in Pixar’s Cars as well as its second and third installments. And throughout it all, she had her husband David Christian by her side. The pair stayed together from their 1962 wedding until Helmond’s death in February 2019.

14. Marie Barone – Doris Roberts

A hundred actresses apparently auditioned to play the part of Marie Barone, but only one was perfect for the part: Doris Roberts. Fans of the show and critics agreed with her casting, too. For one thing, she received seven Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Roberts ultimately took home that award on four occasions.

And Roberts worked in Hollywood until her passing in 2016. You may have seen her in Grandma’s Boy or Madea’s Witness Protection. She also had a guest-starring role in The Middle – a gig that had her back on screen with her Raymond co-star Patricia Heaton. And let’s not forget the cheesy but heartwarming Mrs. Miracle Christmas movies for television.

13. Ally Barone – Madylin Sweeten

Three of the actors who played the Barone children shared the same last name, and that wasn’t a coincidence. They were real-life siblings, too! Madylin Sweeten took the part of Ally – the eldest of the trio both on-screen and off. She was in quite a few more episodes than the twins, though, with 206 Raymond appearances to her name.

The younger Sweetens didn’t act post-Raymond, but Madylin has had some work in Tinseltown after the series wrapped. She’s had small parts in Lucifer and Grey’s Anatomy, and she’s performed as a sketch actor on TMI Hollywood.

12. Debra Barone – Patricia Heaton

Patricia Heaton took home a pair of Emmys for her work on the show. And her character Debra has layers: she’s a dedicated wife and mom, a loving sister-in-law, and a woman who gets easily annoyed by her husband’s parents. Relatable, right? For many women in a family setup, she sure was!

Heaton found her home in sitcoms, and she’s stuck around on TV pretty much ever since Raymond. She starred in The Middle for nearly a decade and had a short-lived leading role in 2019’s Carols Second Act. She’s been lucky in love, too. She’s been married to David Hunt for more than 30 years, and the pair have four sons together.

11. Ray Barone – Ray Romano

You couldn’t have Everybody Loves Raymond without a Raymond, and that role was filled by Ray Romano. The show revolved around him, which meant he had to be hilarious, and he certainly delivered. Romano even won an Emmy for his work on the show, although his career since has taken him from the small to the silver screen.

That’s not to say that Romano hasn’t worked on TV. He’s starred in a series called Men of a Certain Age and had a recurring role in Parenthood. But he’s also branched into movies, voicing Manny in Ice Age, playing a dishonest lawyer in Martin Scorsese’s epic The Irishman, and warming hearts in the rom-com The Big Sick. And he now has four children with Anna Scarpulla, his wife of more than 30 years. We love ya, Ray!

10. Pat MacDougall – Georgia Engel

Five-time Emmy nominee Georgia Engel played Pat MacDougall in the show. In fact, three of her nominations come from this guest-starring role. And you may remember her for saying “Oh, my!” when her family reveals information that scares or stresses her out. Pat is, of course, Amy’s mom.

After Raymond, Engel rediscovered her roots in the theater. She appeared on Broadway alongside Sutton Foster as well as acting in regional theater productions. And you may also remember her brief appearance in The Office. There, she played Irene, the elderly woman cared for by Ellie Kemper’s Erin Hannon.

9. Bernie Gruenfelder – Tom McGowan

We’ve already caught up with Linda Gruenfelder. Now, it’s time to refresh your memory about her husband Bernie! Tom McGowan played the longtime friend of Ray’s. And in the fourth season of the sitcom, the audience learns that Bernie is a jetski salesman, oddly enough.

McGowan’s post-Raymond credits include some beloved and critically acclaimed programs. He’s acted in Hannah Montana, Desperate Housewives, Modern Family, and Veep. He also works regularly in theater – most recently in a Broadway revival of Kiss Me, Kate. But perhaps his most famous role is as Kenny Daly in Frasier.

8. Gianni – Jon Manfrellotti

The guy on the left-hand side of this photo is Jon Manfrelloti, who played Gianni in two dozen episodes of Raymond. The character once worked alongside Ray when he was a futon repairman. Then the pair remained friends, and Gianni has a central role in many an episode of the sitcom.

Playing Gianni counts as Manfrelloti’s biggest career credit to date. But his friendship with Romano got him more acting work after Raymond ended. Namely, he appeared in two episodes of Men of a Certain Age, which starred Romano in a leading role.

7. Andy – Andy Kindler

Several of the fringe characters in Raymond appear to know Ray through work. Well, the show’s leading character knows Andy – played by actor Andy Kindler – through the job he has throughout the run of the show. Both of the men are sports journalists for Newsday

Kindler has kept busy since Raymond ended in 2005. He’s most often performing stand-up comedy, and he released a laugh-ready album called Hence the Humor in 2020. Then there’s Bob’s Burgers. He’s voiced the recurring character of Mort since 2011.

6. Amy MacDougall-Barone – Monica Horan

As the character’s name implies, Amy MacDougall-Barone ends up becoming part of the Barone family. Yes, while she dates Robert on and off, the duo do eventually get married in the series. Yet somehow life imitated art for the actress who played Amy, Monica Horan. She ended up getting wed to Everybody Loves Raymond executive producer Philip Rosenthal.

Horan’s part in the show remains her biggest career credit so far. But she has worked since – and with one of her co-stars from Raymond. The actress appeared in Hot in Cleveland and The Middle, the latter of which starred Patricia Heaton. She also had a fairly regular role in The Bold and the Beautiful until 2019.

5. Geoffrey Barone – Sawyer Sweeten

Ray and Debra Barone’s brood include twin boys, and one of them’s named Geoffrey. Sawyer Sweeten played the part in 142 episodes over the course of the nine-year series. And as is obvious from photos, he was the real-life twin of his brother in the show. Nope, they weren’t identical by chance!

Sawyer didn’t act in anything after Raymond, but he presumably continued to share a close relationship with his twin, Sullivan. They even bought a house together in Riverside, California. Yet Sawyer tragically took his own life just two weeks shy of his 20th birthday. Tributes rolled in from his former co-stars, with Ray Romano remembering the child actor as a “wonderful and sweet kid to be around.”

4. Michael Barone – Sullivan Sweeten

Sullivan Sweeten acted alongside Sawyer as one half of the twins. His acting career went much like his sibling’s did, too. After Raymond ended, he didn’t have any work on screen. But he did continue to spend time with his brother until his untimely passing in 2015.

Sullivan has apparently lived a reclusive life post-Raymond – and especially after his brother’s passing. He didn’t comment in the wake of Sawyer’s death, but family members noted just how close the duo were. In 2015 their uncle Trey told People that the boys had “leveled and equaled each other out with their own personalities.”

3. Frank Barone – Peter Boyle

Peter Boyle earned a whopping seven award nominations for his work on Everybody Loves Raymond. Clearly, the man was funny! He played Ray’s dad, Frank – the no-nonsense patriarch of the family who occasionally has a softer side. And his clashes with Ray’s mom, Marie, lead to all kinds of humorous and regrettable scenarios.

Raymond was the last major acting credit for Boyle, who had a 40-year career in Hollywood. Mind you, he did act in the third installment of The Santa Clause and in All Roads Lead Home after the show. The latter flick came out two years after Boyle passed away in 2006.

2. Hank MacDougall – Fred Willard

You wouldn’t see Pat MacDougall in the show without her husband, Hank, in tow. Fred Willard played the ultra-conservative father of Robert’s wife, Amy. He first appears in the show when Robert wants to ask for Amy’s hand in marriage. But – spoiler alert – Hank turns down the initial request.

Willard died in 2020, but the actor kept busy in the years between Raymond and his passing. He’s perhaps most famous for collaborating with Christopher Guest and appeared in his 2006 film For Your Consideration. The esteemed comedic actor also played Phil Dunphy’s dad, Frank, in Modern Family – a role that earned him an Emmy nomination.

1. Robert Barone – Brad Garrett

Robert Barone played second fiddle to his brother, Ray – and Brad Garrett embodied that part to a tee. Robert has a mopey attitude – a bit like Droopy the dog – but he has no problem firing zingers at his parents, with whom he bunks for most of the series. And Garrett took home plenty of hardware for his work on Everybody Loves Raymond. He won three Emmys!

Garrett has worked steadily since Raymond ended. You may have caught him in the leading role in ‘Til Death, or in the short-lived sitcom Single Parents. His unique voice has also helped him land voiceover work in such popular films as Finding Nemo, Tangled, and Ratatouille. And his personal life has been on the upswing as well. In 2016 Garrett got engaged to his girlfriend Isabella Quella.
