Have you ever wondered what it would have been like if Jennifer Aniston hadn’t played Rachel or Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn’t cast as Buffy? It seems like sacrilege to contemplate such notions, but in actual fact some of the most beloved movies and TV shows ever made could have been completely different had the auditions gone differently. And yes, we are talking iconic roles in legendary sitcoms and movies! These 40 will make your mind boggle just thinking what might have been.

40. Fat chance of being Faramir for Orlando Bloom

The Lord of the Rings movies enjoyed stunning success when they were released in the early noughties. Though the Peter Jackson-directed epics that were based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel could have turned out very differently – particularly for the career of Orlando Bloom. The English actor originally tried to land the role of Faramir, but he lost out to Aussie David Wenham. Instead, Bloom was cast as the crossbow-shooting elf Legolas, and he went on to become a big Hollywood star.

39. Bailey barred from being Bassett on Bridgerton

The American made but London-based period drama Bridgerton has become hugely popular in the United States. According to Deadline, up to 82 million households watched the first season on Netflix! But producers realized Bailey was perfect for Anthony, and after reading scripts for that the change was made.

38. Sandra Oh almost played a different Grey’s Anatomy character

Are there two more iconic stars on Grey’s Anatomy than doctors Miranda Bailey and Cristina Yang? Yes, the two characters – portrayed by Chandra Wilson and Sandra Oh respectively – have been central to the show’s success. Can you imagine not having [Wilson]? Forget it!”

37. Tom Hiddleston thought he could be the main superhero

English actor Tom Hiddleston is known the world over for his portrayal of the villain Loki in the Marvel Comics Universe. But he actually originally tested for the superhero Thor! Alas, it was not to be – despite him fulfilling the criteria of being over six feet tall and having long blonde hair at that time. You can watch his somewhat cringey audition tape on YouTube, as it aired when he appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in 2019. Though it did land him the Loki gig, to be fair.

36. Brooklyn Nine-Nine no-no for Chelsea Peretti

Everyone who watches the sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine knows Chelsea Peretti as Gina Linetti – the snarky former civilian administrator of the 99th Precinct. But it could have been so different. Peretti revealed at a HuffPost Live event in 2015, “Should I drop a bomb? I initially auditioned for the part of Rosa, which was not called Rosa at the time. [I] did not get it, but they called me and were like, ‘We’re going to write a different part for you.’ So, my part was not in the script that I initially read.” Wow.

35. Liam Hemsworth wanted to play Peeta in The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games – a warped dystopian fantasy about a televised deathmatch competition – wowed many critics and audiences in 2012. 33. Heath Ledger went from hero to villain

Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight garnered universal acclaim and posthumously landed him an Oscar. How cool!

31. Chadwick Boseman bombed but bounced back brilliantly

Chadwick Boseman really made a huge mark in the Marvel Comic Universe with his acclaimed performance in Black Panther. 30. Steve Carrell rained on Rainn Wilson’s parade

Yes, actor Eddie Redmayne told Empire magazine in 2016, “I actually auditioned to play Tom Riddle when I was back at university. I properly failed and didn’t get a call back. Over the years, I always hoped I might be cast as a member of the Weasley family, but unfortunately not.”

23. Iwan Rheon as Jon Snow?

It’s hard to deny that Game of Thrones was a cultural phenomenon. But the HBO fantasy based on the novels of George R. R. Martin nearly had a remarkably different piece of casting. BuzzFeed notes that Iwan Rheon screen tested for the role of Jon Snow. The actor didn’t get it, of course, but he impressed producers enough to land the part of Ramsay Bolton. That’s just as well, because it is hard to imagine Snow being portrayed by anyone other than Kit Harrington!

22. Jon Favreau almost became Chandler Bing

Friends is a series with a number of eye-raising casting decisions. And one of these was the role of quick-witted funnyman Chandler Bing. Believe it or not, but Swingers star Jon Favreau reportedly auditioned for the role and was offered the part. And it was Davis who requested to play Charlotte – a character she more closely identified with. TV history would never have been the same!

19. Lily James was nearly cast as Cinderella

The 2015 live-action retelling of Cinderella was a success. But as unthinkable as it might be, Lily James nearly wasn’t the titular character. She told Nightline, “I actually originally went in for one of the sisters to play Anastasia. According to BuzzFeed, she landed the role when producers couldn’t find a black actor for Ryan Evans and decided to change her character to white Caucasian.

16. Olivia was Wilde about the role of Marissa

Nevertheless, Wilde turned up in the series as Alex Kelly – a lover of both Cooper and Seth Cohen.

12. Lupita Nyong’o nearly nabbed Nebula

Black Panther arguably wouldn’t have been as great if it hadn’t featured Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia. Casting guru Sarah Finn later revealed Nyong’o was not required to screen-test for Nakia – such was the confidence in her talent.

11. Chris Pratt went for the role of Captain America

The role of Captain America was unsurprisingly a much-coveted one. But before it went to Chris Evans, the likes of John Krasinski and Chris Pratt attempted to land the Marvel Universe gig. 6. Shannen Doherty almost played Veronica in Heathers

The rather controversial teen comedy Heathers has become something of a cult favorite in the decades since its release. Yet the 1989 film’s notable cast nearly had a different look to it. A then-17-year-old Shannen Doherty reportedly eyed the plum part of Veronica, but Winona Ryder had already got it. After nailing the audition, Doherty refused to go blonde to match the other “Heathers” – settling on being a redhead in the flick.

5. Lindsay Lohan as George in Mean Girls

It’s unimaginable to us that anyone could play Mean Girls ultimate meanie Regina George but Rachel McAdams. Yes, the Hollywood hellraiser wanted to play the Queen of the Plastics and auditioned for it, according to Screen Rant. But despite Lohan’s wish to go against her on-screen type, Paramount pushed her towards playing Cady. It was a good call, we’d say.

4. Charisma Carpenter playing Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

Nobody else could’ve been Buffy Summers but Sarah Michelle Gellar, could they? Well, yes actually. Believe it or not, Gellar nearly wound-up being Cordelia Chase, and the producers had originally wanted Katie Holmes to be the titular character. But the latter opted to complete high school instead.
